Unlocking the Power of a Healthier Home and Workplace: Tackling Body Burden

It's been quite a year for me, filled with hair-raising health challenges, but I'm not talking about the usual suspects like COVID or long COVID. Back in April, my health took a nosedive, and what followed was a whirlwind of doctor's visits, consultations, tests, and examinations. I reached out to allopathic, naturopathic, and functional medical physicians, delved into Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, and sought advice from herbalists and spiritual healers in my quest for answers. Through this journey, I've realized something profound - I am the captain of my health ship, and I bear the responsibility for my well-being.

Among the myriad of symptoms I've experienced, the one that stood out the most was chronic fatigue. It's as if a cloud of exhaustion had settled over me, making even the simplest tasks feel like monumental challenges. 

After a thorough discussion with one of my insightful holistic practitioners, she suggested a heavy metal test. She reviewed all my symptoms, blood work and history, and was convinced that the root cause of most of my health problems stemmed from mercury toxicity. She was right.

In addition to grappling with chronic fatigue, I also have Chronic Kidney Disease phase 3a, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, and a history of dental issues, which have significantly contributed to my overall health and well-being. The dental problems stemmed from extensive work I had done between 2020 and 2022, inadvertently adding to my heavy metal toxicity and overall body burden.

To compound matters, I grew up in a home where my father ran a dental practice on the bottom floor of our three-story house. As a child, I was exposed to a myriad of heavy metals, a reality that has haunted me into adulthood. Recently, I received the results from the heavy metal test, and the numbers were staggering – my mercury and lead levels were off the charts. My holistic healthcare provider's intuition has been spot on, and I'm thrilled to report that her prescribed supplement regimen is making a world of difference in my life.

But the revelations didn't stop there. I discovered I had no significant food allergies, except for a low tolerance to gluten (which was a bit of a downer), but I was allergic to mold and fungi. It became clear to me that I needed to take a closer look at my environment, particularly my home, which is also my workplace.

Our homes and workplaces are where we spend most of our time, making them significant contributors to our Body Burden. Many chronic health issues are directly linked to the toxins lurking in our everyday environments. Empowerment begins with knowledge, and one of the most effective ways to combat Body Burden is by reducing exposure to toxins in your daily life. Here's a list of actions you can take to create a healthier environment:

  • Food: Pesticides, additives, and preservatives in our food can lead to various health problems, including hormone disruption, allergies, and even cancer.

  • Read Labels:  Familiarize yourself with the ingredients in the products you use. Look for organic and natural alternatives.

  • Choose Organic Foods: Opt for organic produce and foods to minimize exposure to pesticides and additives.

    This diagram offers us suggestions on what to eat for particular parts of our body. I have been eating a lot of grapes, blueberries, cauliflower, and red peppers. An Ayurvedic, renal diet. My kidneys are happier. 

  • Cleaning Products: Many household cleaners contain harmful chemicals that can irritate the respiratory system, disrupt hormones, and damage the environment.

  • Go Green with Cleaning: Use eco-friendly and non-toxic cleaning products. You can make your own using simple ingredients like vinegar and baking soda.

  • Personal Care Products: Skin creams, shampoos, and cosmetics often contain toxins like parabens and phthalates that can be absorbed through the skin, potentially causing reproductive issues and other health concerns.

  • Embrace Natural Personal Care: Seek personal care products with minimal chemical additives. There are many natural and organic options available today. I use Coconut oil for most of my personal care, from oil pulling to oiling my skin and hair. More on that in another post.

  • Ventilation Matters: Improve indoor air quality by ensuring good ventilation in your home and workplace.

  • Filter Your Water: Consider installing a water filter to remove harmful contaminants from your drinking water.

In our household items, choosing cookware and utensils made from safer materials like stainless steel or cast iron can mitigate exposure to heavy metals. When remodeling or renovating, opt for lead-free paints and materials to prevent contamination.

Proper disposal of items containing heavy metals, such as batteries and electronic waste, is essential to prevent them from leaching into our soil and water supply. Recycling and responsible disposal programs can help us make a positive impact on the environment.

On a daily basis, Americans are exposed to many of the 80,000 chemicals currently used in the United States—few of which are adequately tested for their effects on health.

In a single day, we are bombarded by an alarming number of those chemicals from various sources - our food, cleaning products, personal care items, building materials, supply chains, plastics, and pharmaceutical drugs. It can feel overwhelming, but it's essential to remember that less can truly equal more when it comes to the quality of our lives. Don't be fooled by fancy packaging, false claims, or slick marketing. 

Empower yourself to take charge of your health and well-being by making informed choices. Choose products that prioritize safety, transparency, and environmental responsibility. As you reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals, you pave the way for a healthier, more vibrant life.
